Innovation at Yeongam Solar Power Plant: What's LS Electric's Formula for Sustainable Energy?

Unveiling the Marvel: LS Electric's Yeongam Solar Power Plant

In the picturesque landscape of Yeongam-gun, South Jeolla Province, LS Electric has etched a powerful mark on the renewable energy horizon with the completion of the Yeongam Solar Power Plant. This groundbreaking project boasts a total production capacity of 94 megawatts, making it one of the largest in Korea.

Cutting-Edge Control Center

At the mountain's pinnacle lies the integrated control center, equipped with a state-of-the-art power management system. This system allows real-time monitoring of electricity generation and comprehensive surveillance of the solar panel array through a network of hundreds of cameras.

"Currently generating 30 megawatts daily on average, the plant is optimized for the summer season, reaching an average output of 60 megawatts during that time," shares an LS Electric official.

Responsible Land Utilization Spanning 2.96 square kilometers, the permitted area for construction, LS Electric strategically occupies only 40 percent of this land, preserving the mountainous environment. Lee Geun-woo, the project integration team leader, explains, "Due to the mountainous terrain, solar panels are sparsely installed, respecting the limited development area."

A Green Initiative The solar power plant, constructed on one of the largest sections of the land, involved the removal of some trees. However, LS Electric remains committed to minimizing its environmental impact. The plant is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 56,000 tons, equivalent to planting 310,000 pine trees.

LS Electric's Comprehensive Role

Awarded an engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contract, LS Electric spearheaded the entire project, including the design, manufacturing, purchase, delivery, and construction of the solar power generation facility. The plant also features a 251-megawatt-hours energy storage system (ESS), a 143-kilovolt substation, and transmission lines.

The Power of Storage

The energy storage system plays a pivotal role in the plant's efficiency. Direct current generated by the solar panels is converted to AC by inverters, stored in the ESS, and can be converted back to a 153-kilovolt supply for the Korea Electric Power Corp.'s (KEPCO) system on demand.

Green Impact and Future Visions

The Yeongam Solar Power Plant is poised to make a significant impact, producing 121GWh of electricity annually and supplying more than 30,000 households. It's not just a power plant; it's a testament to LS Electric's commitment to sustainability, utilizing all products and technologies produced by the company.
